Our pets begin their day just like the rest of the family! Rise and Shine with a healthy breakfast and a little exercise! Their workout beings with a romp in the yard and a game of tag with the intruders! Jersey & Jazz eagerly race off the deck and begin the roundup of squirrel’s and bunny “yabbits”!
Suddenly the bunnies are safe in their rabbit hole and the squirrel's have scurried up the nearest tree!Jersey does one last scan of the tree tops to make sure those pesky birds stay put! The perimeter is secure and our domain is safe once again, thanks to our energetic pups! They proudly parade around the yard knowing that they have done their job well in protecting our home. We enjoy watching this daily routine as our pets entertain us with their antics.
Just a short time ago our world changed in an instant along with our routine. Our chief squirrel chaser was injured in a bizarre twist of fate.Jersey was hurt during a routine game of soccer. While playing ball, a disc ruptured in her back putting pressure on her spinal cord. Her hips were instantly paralyzed. The prognosis was bleak, but surgery would repair the disc and the spinal cord did not appear to be damaged. While she was away, Jazz kept watch waiting for her to return. Both pups were very happy to be reunited after Jersey ’s stay in the hospital. Jazz has since stayed by Jersey ’s side, eating, sleeping and performing the daily workout routine. However, the routine begins a bit differently as Jersey needs help walking. She is carried outside and walks the yard with the aid of one of us holding her back legs in a sling. But she still makes sure she does her duty in alerting Jazz if he missed an intruder! Jazz appears pleased to pick up the slack and carry out the task even if Jersey is on the sidelines. This is the best therapy for Jersey as it makes her day as normal as possible. Soon, she will begin rehabilitation sessions to ensure the best recovery possible. Our pet’s health is no less important than any other family member. Be it a minor skin allergy or a debilitating injury, we do what is necessary to treat, cure and restore a good quality of life to our devoted pups.

We are happy to report Jersey is on the road to recovery. She has regained movement in her back legs although can’t support weight just yet. Dogs have an amazing ability to adapt and our Jerz is no exception. Stubborn and determined she keeps us on the go! “Where did she go now” I ask, as I return to the place I left her and find an empty room! “She’s in here with me”, is the answer I receive in reply. I should scold her for traveling without permission! But when I think about it….every little trip she takes into the next room is a journey she is struggling to make. Being stubborn may very well be her biggest asset in her recovery. We are so proud of her and her will to maintain her place in our Family.
Today I passed a young mother putting her child on the school bus. Their devoted pup was right by her side. As the bus pulled away they turned to walk back to the house. This proud pup knew he had done his job well! In triumph he jumped and leapt and romped around the yard finally taking the stairs two at a time! My thoughts turned to Jersey and the day she too can get back to her normal routine. We take our four legged friends for granted until the day comes that they become two legged. Then it is our turn to protect them and keep them safe just as they do for us, unconditionally, every single day!
I am so happy that Jersey is well on her way to recovery. Even though her purpose has been slowed she still adapts to find a way to serve it out.
ReplyDeleteTodd recently read a book called "A Dog's Purpose". I have yet to get the chance to read it, but from his recommendation alone I can highly suggest it as a good read for all proud dog owners, and others too!
Great Blog!
